What is SMD Screen technology?

SMD Screen

Surface mount technology (SMT) is a method of producing electronic circuits in which components are mounted or placed directly on the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). An electronic device manufactured in this way is called a surface mount device (SMD).

SMD Screen came about due to devices becoming smaller and the need to be able to fit this type of LED into smaller technology. So with that said, the uses of SMDs grew rapidly in the first decade of the 21st century.

DIP LED display is one of the old designs of LED compared to the new technology of SMD. But it is also one of the most durable and stable solutions for outdoor LED display. SMD Screen display is a new technology in recent years and it is becoming more and more popular due to its better image quality and higher resolution.

Here is a photo showing the DIP and SMD LEDs for your reference.

Advantages of DIP and disadvantages of SMD

For DIP, each pixel is composed of three independent colors (RGB) LED bulbs. Each bulb has two long legs. The long feet are inserted into the PCB pad, so after soldering through the hole, there will rarely be a cold soldering problem. The SMD LED screen has short feet, and the LED lamp has been mounted on the PCB pad, which is easier to cause cold soldering problems than DIP.

Long legs make LED bulbs achieve better heat dissipation performance. Better heat dissipation means long lifespan for LED displays. So, DIP LEDs would be more durable than SMDs in the long run.

The size of the LED DIP lamp is large, it allows the led displays to present higher brightness. Usually, normal brightness DIP LED displays can reach 7500 nits while high brightness can reach over 10000 nits. Normally, for outdoor SMD LED display, the brightness is around 6000 nits.

DIP LED displays consume less power compared to the same SMD specifications. Usually, the power consumption of DIP LED displays is 1/3 less than SMD Screen.

Compared with DIP displays, SMD displays have the following advantages:

SMTs are lightweight, they have a much wider viewing angle, the color output is much sharper and truer to the desired color with better color uniformity They are more energy efficient than DIP.

SMD chips offering better heat dispersion, high light output (high luminous flux) and longer overall lifespan (low optical decay) than its predecessor the DIP LED.

SMD has a much more natural look and feel of an image on an LED screen – being much less pixelated.

CMS is that they can be easily manufactured using quantity efficient mass production, which helps in reducing costs during production. This will obviously save labor costs and LED displays can have a larger production scale.

DIP vs SMD

In general, they both have pros and cons. If your outdoor fixed installation project requires high brightness and more durable application, you can choose DIP LED displays.

If you need a higher resolution and wider viewing angle, an SMD Screen would be a good option. For indoor application, the viewing distance is shorter and generally, we are looking for the best image quality and no need for very high brightness, so SMD-led displays would always be the best option.
