The satisfaction of transforming worn-out furniture into a new, shiny piece that will add style to your home decor is a great DIY project. You can either update the furniture in your home to give it a fresh look or you can paint some furniture you bought at a thrift shop to add a new lease of life.
In a few simple steps, we will cover the entire process of painting furniture. So, let’s get started:
Preparation:
You must prepare the surface before you begin painting. A smooth painting process is possible with proper preparation.
- Surface Cleaning: Remove dirt, dust and grime. This can be done by using mild soap and warm water. Allow it to completely dry before moving on.
- Surface Sanding: Using fine-grit paper, roughen up the surface. This will improve the paint adhesion and promote a smoother surface. Sand in the direction that the wood grain is running.
- Repairing: Fill in any cracks or imperfections with wood filler. After the wood filler has dried, sand it again to create a smooth and seamless surface.
- Remove any hardware from your furniture, such as knobs or handles. This will give it a professional and clean look.
Selecting the Primer and Paint:
You need to select the correct paint and primer before you begin painting your furniture. It’s not only about picking your favorite or the best color. It’s about choosing the type of paint that will adhere perfectly to your furniture and enhance its aesthetics.
- Type of Paint: You will need to choose a paint specifically designed for furniture. For example, you can choose latex or chalk. These options offer durability and smoothness. You should also consider the level of sheen. Matte finishes can hide imperfections, while glossy finishes are easier for you to clean.
- Primer: When it comes to painting, applying primer is one of the most crucial processes. Primers are especially important if you’re painting over a glossy or dark surface. Primer helps the paint to adhere and provides a uniform surface for the topcoat.
Application:
After you have all your preparations done, including the equipment, paint and primer, you can begin the exciting task of painting furniture. You must take certain steps when painting furniture. You should follow these steps:
- The paint must be thoroughly stirred before you begin the application. Stir the paint thoroughly to ensure that it is of an even color and consistency.
- The best quality brushes and rollers: You should invest in the highest-quality foam rollers or brushes when painting. They will give you a professional finish. Consider using a foam or small brush to get the finer details.
- Applying thin layers: Instead of applying one thick coat, apply several thin ones. It will allow for each coat to completely dry before adding the nest. This will help to prevent drips, and ensure a smooth finish.
- The Grain Direction: Follow the direction of your furniture’s grain when painting it to get a smooth, seamless finish.

Before I refinished the oak dining table that Chris’ grandfather had given me, I was utterly clueless about how to finish furniture in a lasting way.
Back then, painting furniture was a popular concept. I spent hours researching online to learn how to do it. I found a few bits of information, but couldn’t find an article that explained the entire process or listed the steps in a simple way.
So, I’m going to do that today ….starting at step 1. This dresser was found at a local second-hand store. I am excited to bring it into our bedroom to show you my process. This is how it looked in the beginning.
The drawers are beautifully detailed and I like the size. It had so much potential, but the paint job was among the worst I’ve seen. The plan was to repaint the house and I chose a beige with less yellow undertones.

THE PREPWORK
Grab your screwdriver, and remove all knobs, hinges and hardware. Remove all drawers and doors. This will make painting so easy!
SAND THE WOOD FURNITURE
Some DIY blogs and paints (chalk) claim that you do not need to sand your walls before painting. My experience has shown me that sanding down to is always necessary. It is important that your primer and paint adhere to a smooth surface. A glossy, chipped or peeling surface will make it difficult for paint to last. You need to start by sanding your furniture.
Use a Power Sander to remove any paint, varnish or topcoat on your furniture. I start by sanding everything with sandpaper of 80 grit. It’s not necessary to sand down to the original wood. However, your paint will adhere much better if it is. Sanding is done to roughen up the surface so that your primer can adhere. If sanding the wood down to bareness is difficult, I will sand the surface until it feels slightly rough.
To smooth the surface, I use sandpaper with 220 grit. You can skip the 80-grit sandpaper if the furniture is not covered in a thick coat of varnish or paint.
You may occasionally be able get away with using a fine-grit sanding pad. It’s not something I recommend (because it does not roughen the surface like a power-sander), but it can be used for furniture that is already in good condition and has bare wood.
MAKE REPAIRS AND PREPARE FOR PAINT
Now is the time to repair any scratches, gouges or holes. Check to make sure the holes in the old knobs and pulls will line up with the new ones if you are planning on changing them. This stainable and paintable wood filler is what I use to fill in any imperfections or holes. After the wood filler has dried, I use a fine-grit sanding pad or a power sander to sand down any imperfections. Also visit carpenter dubai.
After the repairs, I prepare the furniture to be primed and painted. You should clean the furniture thoroughly and remove all dust. You can tape off any areas of furniture you do not want painted, such as the interiors or drawers. Because this dresser was just for me I didn’t care much about protecting the inside of the drawer. But when I care, I use Painter’s Tape and newspapers.
Add Decorative Touches
After you have finished painting your furniture, the next exciting part is to add decorative touches. Add decorative touches to your furniture for a dramatic difference in the look of it before and after. How to do it like an expert:
- Distress: To create a vintage look, you can distress the edges of furniture using sandpaper. A sanding board can also be used. Focus on the areas that will naturally wear out over time. This includes corners and edges.
- Stenciling – If you wish to add intricate designs or patterns to your furniture, you can do so using stencils. This is a fantastic way to customize your furniture while adding visual interest.
- Decoupage: You can decoupage decorative papers or fabrics onto the surface of your furniture. This technique adds personality and texture to furniture.
Sealing and protection:
After you have finished painting your furniture and adding any decorative accents, it’s time to ensure that your newly completed furniture will last for a long time. Follow the below steps to ensure your furniture stays in good condition for longer.
- Topcoat: Apply a clear sealer or topcoat first. This will help protect your paint and give it extra durability. You can select a finish to complement the sheen of your paint, such as matte or satin.
- Allow Time for Drying. After applying the topcoat, allow some time for it to dry completely. This will prevent smudges on your furniture and ensure durability.
- Cleaning regularly is the best way to maintain your freshly painted furniture. Use a mild solution of soap and water. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they may damage the newly painted finish.
